Tell us a little bit about your organisation and the services you provide?
CAB is a network of independent charities offering free, confidential and impartial advice to individuals on various issues, including benefits advice, debt, housing, employment and legal matters. The service aim is to help people resolve their problems and understands their rights and responsibilities.
Who are the key groups or individuals your organisation supports?
Individuals in financial difficulty: help with debt issues, income maximisation through benefit applications. Support individuals dealing with employment disputes, housing issues (evictions) or relationship issues. Provide advice on managing energy costs or other household bills.
Primary goal: to provide advice that empowers individuals to resolve their problems and make informed decisions.
What is one thing you wish more people knew about the work that you do?
“We provide free, confidential, and impartial advice to help you solve problems, understand your rights, and take control of your situation—no matter who you are or what you’re facing.”
Cab’s accessibility and commitment to empowering individuals without judgment or barriers.
What do you think is the biggest difference your organisation makes?
Resolves Critical Issues: CAB helps people tackle life’s biggest challenges, such as debt, housing crises, or unemployment. For many, this can mean the difference between losing their home or staying afloat.
Improves Financial Stability: By providing tailored advice on managing finances, accessing benefits, or reducing bills, CAB helps people regain financial control and reduce stress.
Promotes Fairness and Justice: CAB advocates for individuals facing unfair treatment at work, discrimination, or legal disputes, ensuring they can assert their rights.
Supports Vulnerable Groups: The bureau is often a lifeline for marginalized or vulnerable people, including those who lack knowledge of their rights or face systemic barriers.
Strengthens Communities: By helping individuals resolve personal issues, CAB indirectly supports healthier, more resilient communities where people can contribute more fully to society.
What are some of the challenges you face
- Challenge: A growing number of people are seeking advice due to cost of living crisis costs, debt, housing, legal or employment disputes.
- Impact: This can lead to long waiting times, overburdened staff, and difficulty in providing timely support.
Limited Funding and Resources
- Challenge: Many CAB offices rely on government grants, donations, and volunteer support, which may not always be sufficient to meet demand.
- Impact: Budget constraints can limit the availability of services, reduce outreach efforts, and affect staff training or retention.
Complexity of Cases
- Challenge: Cases are increasingly complex, often involving overlapping legal, financial, and personal issues (e.g., immigration and housing combined).
- Impact: Advisors may require specialized knowledge and more time to address such cases, stretching resources thin.
