Ceartas Digest 9th – 13th January 2017
13 January, 2017Human Rights Workshop, this February
2 February, 2017Monday
A member of the team accompanied a young man to an ESA assessment: Employment and Support Allowance is a benefit for people who are unable to work due to illness or disability. The role of advocacy was to support him when explaining his situation, in order for the assessor to understand fully and help him provide an accurate report.
Tuesday
The team welcomed Catherine from Breathing Space who came to discuss a bit about the service and the 52 Weeks of Kindness campaign they are currently running (more info here). The campaign is designed to encourage the people of Scotland to act kindly more often and provides suggestions: my personal favourite was ‘give your colleague a compliment.’ Still waiting…
De Café Bearsden welcomed Carrie Morton from Trading Standards to discuss bogus callers. More info and photos available on our Facebook page.
Wednesday
A member of the team attended an AWI (Adults with Incapacity) meeting for an elderly lady who is currently in hospital as there is a possibility that she will require long term care. The role of advocacy in this particular case was to gather the woman’s views using a non-instructed advocacy approach and ensure that her views are taken into account and that her rights are upheld.
Thursday
Cheryl and Ronnie visited another potential venue for the Advocacy Conference later in the year – some great options across East Dunbartonshire so far.
Friday
A member of the team joined a young woman to a social work review: this process considers whether the outcomes identified in the care plan are being met and acts as a review of these goals and to make sure they’re still appropriate. The role of advocacy is to support the client in expressing their views on their situation and what changes they feel is necessary and why. This may or may not lead to care plan changes, and either outcome can be supported by advocacy.
De Café Kirkintilloch hosted a Burns Supper at Kirky Baptist Church. Stay tuned for pics!
