It is about making sure that others listen to what individuals have to say, making sure that their views and opinions are represented. For example, frequently people with dementia need more time to make decisions and need to be given the space and opportunity to think about their options. Ceartas staff work to ensure individuals are treated with an understanding of how a person’s illness can affect the way in which they communicate.
So how does it work?
Our staff is called advocates and they work to assist people to express their opinions and ensure that their rights are protected. The advocacy worker will make sure an individual will have a say in any decisions made which will affect their life. This can happen by the worker ensuring that information is presented in the most appropriate way and by supporting the individual throughout the time when circumstances make that individual vulnerable.
What exactly does an advocate do?
An advocate can provide support to arrange financial and legal affairs or care issues. The advocate can also give practical support prior to and/or during meetings. The advocate can also contact other agencies on the individual’s behalf such as social work or health.
What is advocacy not about?
Advocacy is not about the worker’s views or about making an individual do something they do not want to do.
How do I get an advocate?
The quickest way is to phone. Simply call 0141 775 0433 and say that you want to make a referral and explain the circumstances. If you are phoning for another person it would be helpful if you had some key information available e.g. date of birth, address, relevant contacts and if there are any special circumstances that a worker should be aware of before a meeting. Or remember you can visit us at our offices in Kirkintilloch.
