About Us
Ceartas, since 2008, has provided independent professional advocacy to all adult community care groups in East Dunbartonshire giving priority to:
- Older people
- Dementia
- Mental Health
- Learning Disability
- Physical Disability
- Sensory Impairment
- Acquired Brain Injury
- Additional Communication Needs
Ceartas actually started life in Kirkintilloch in 1994 at that time it was managed by Alzheimer Scotland Action on Dementia and was called the 'North Glasgow and Strathkelvin' advocacy service.
The name Ceartas (pron. Kier-tis) is a Gaelic word for equity, fairness, justice and right. It was chosen as this is what we are trying to achieve and promote as we support and represent individuals in East Dunbartonshire.
In response to Scottish Executive guidelines in 2003 Alzheimer Scotland agreed to disengage its' advocacy service with the view to forming an independent organisation. A steering group was developed to establish a new charity and from those discussions Ceartas was formed in March 2004.
From April 2004, Ceartas took over advocacy provision for older people and individuals with dementia for East Dunbartonshire before expanding to its present service user groups in 2008 following a competitive tender in that year.
Ceartas currently employs nine staff delivering a variety of roles and is managed by a board of directors elected by our membership.
